GI Bill Programs - For Who and How Much Money

As described in GI Bill 101, the GI Bill helps all service members at different stages in their lives and military careers whether it be a veteran, reservist, or on active duty. Use the following to determine which group you fall into and then learn about the duration of benefits, the types of education programs funded, and the amount of benefits allowable under the bill.

Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty (MGIB-AD)

  • For active duty
  • 36 months of education benefits
  • For degree, certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-job training, and correspondence courses
  • Payments for tuition and fees (effective 8/1/08)
    • $1,321 per month for enlistment of three (3) or more years
    • $1,073 per month for enlistment of less than three (3) years

Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty (MGIB-SR)

  • For reservists in Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, and Army and Air National Guard
  • 36 months of education benefits
  • For degree, certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-job training, and correspondence courses
  • Payments for tuition and fees (effective 10/1/08)
    • $329 per month for full time training
    • $247 per month for on-job training/apprenticeship for first six months; $181 for second six months; and $115 per month thereafter

Veterans Education Assistance Program (VEAP)

  • For veterans with active duty between 1/1/77 and 6/30/85 and made contributions to participate in VEAP
  • Up to 36 months of education benefits
  • Veterans are matched on a $2 to $1 basis by the government
  • For degree, certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-job training, and correspondence courses

Reserve Education Assistance Program (REAP)

  • For reservists called to active duty in response to a national emergency or war as declared by Congress or the President
  • 36 months of education benefits
  • Payments are based on a percentage of the active duty rate; ranges from 40% (less than 90 days of service) to 80% (2 continuous years of service)
  • For degree, certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-job training, and correspondence courses except national examination and testing.
